Following the deaths of two individuals on a recent Saturday, the individual who is believed to have caused the crash has been taken into custody in California. Police say that alcohol, as well as drugs, appear to be a causal factor in this collision. The man, who has several past DUI convictions, must now focus on ensuring that his legal rights are protected in this situation.
The accident took place during the morning hours. The man was driving a sedan, which left the road on Interstate 8. The car came into contact with a fence and went through it before colliding with a concrete drain.
The incident occurred when the driver began to go toward the road's middle divider and overcorrected, thus causing him to drive erratically. The two passengers in the car, both 20 years old, were killed. The driver suffered serious injuries and is in a coma.
Since two people died in the wreck, the man will face charges of vehicular homicide, felony driving under the influence and murder (because of a former DUI conviction). When a person is convicted of driving while intoxicated, this may lead to time in jail as well as substantial fines and other penalties. Moreover, the consequences of a conviction may impede career choices and follow the individual the rest of their life. Although this type of situation can be embarrassing and frightening for an individual, anyone that is accused of committing a crime has important legal rights. Guilt must be proved beyond a reasonable doubt by the state of California before any conviction is possible.
