A deadly accident recently occurred near Fresno. According to police, the accident was the result of drunk driving. The man who is accused of causing the DUI accident now faces several California criminal charges.
Police said they received reports about a driver who was possibly intoxicated at about 12:30 p.m. A witness reportedly saw the male motorist stumble into his automobile. Authorities said that when they tried to pull him over, the driver blew through a stop sign and sped away.
As the 18-year-old driver reportedly attempted to escape from police, he failed to stop at a red traffic signal on a street and ended up crashing into another car occupied by four people. Authorities said the man then kept on driving but later decided to stop and surrender to police. The 50-year-old woman driving the car that was hit died from the injuries she suffered. The other three people in the car were also taken to the hospital with injuries. Meanwhile, the driver who allegedly caused the accident suffered no injuries in the collision.
The man has been charged with murder and multiple other felony charges. He has the option of fighting the charges related to the alleged DUI crash at trial, where California prosecutors must prove the formal allegations beyond a reasonable doubt before a conviction can be secured. Alternatively, the man may seek to negotiate a plea deal with the prosecution, which may lead to lighter charges and/or a more lenient sentence than what would be imposed following a finding of guilt at trial. The criminal defense will work to ensure ensure that all of the defendant's rights are upheld throughout the proceedings.
