Woman arrested for drunk driving following fatal crash

A motorcyclist in California lost his life in a recent automobile crash. Meanwhile, another individual involved in the accident was taken into custody for drunk driving. The fatal accident took place on a Sunday along the 5 Freeway.

The motorcycle crash occurred at about 2:05 a.m. According to authorities, the motorcyclist was going south on the freeway and ended up being struck by another driver. The motorcyclist was thrown from his bike and fell onto the road. The individual who reportedly struck him fled the scene.

When the motorcyclist stood up, yet another driver allegedly hit him with her car. Although fellow motorists stopped to help the motorcyclist, he passed away at the crash scene. The woman who police said struck him was taken into custody on suspicion of drunk driving as well as vehicular manslaughter. Police continued to investigate the crash.

Facing drunk driving and related vehicular manslaughter charges in California can understandably be frightening, as being convicted on these charges will lead to time behind bars. However, those facing such charges have the right to fight them at trial, where the prosecution must prove them beyond a reasonable doubt before a conviction can happen. Alternatively, the accused may attempt to negotiate a plea agreement with the prosecution, as this may lead to lesser charges and to a more lenient sentence compared with what may be rendered following a guilty finding at trial. An attorney will push for the most personally favorable outcome for the defendant given the circumstances surrounding his or her case.
