East Bay area police ready for DUIs on Cinco de Mayo

It is one of the year's most joyous celebrations: Cinco de Mayo. The annual gala takes place this Saturday, with parties, music, dancing and more scheduled to take place across the East Bay from morning until well into the night. Of course, Mexican beers, margaritas and other alcoholic beverages will be part of the celebrations, which means that law enforcement agencies across California will be on the lookout for drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

As you probably know, California takes an uncompromising approach to those suspected of DUI. If convicted, you can face harsh penalties that take away your freedom, driving privileges and more.

Although Cinco de Mayo originally marked the Mexican army's victory over France in 1862, the May 5 holiday has evolved over the years into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage.

Law enforcement agencies have for years increased the numbers of patrols on and around Cinco de Mayo. Those extra police cars are expensive to put out on the streets of Hayward and surrounding communities. One of the ways that cities recoup those costs is to direct law enforcement to make DUI arrests.

If you have been busted on a drunk driving charge, the arresting officer will take your driver's license and forward it to the DMV. There your license will be automatically suspended - unless you request a hearing within 10 days of the arrest.

An attorney experienced in DUI defense can help you take immediate action to protect your driving privileges, but also to protect your rights and freedom at every step of the legal process.

Before you speak with an Alameda County prosecutor or law enforcement investigator, sit down to discuss your legal options with an attorney dedicated to protecting your interests.
